Volumes to slow as Japan switches from paper

Thin trading volumes over the festive period in Japan are likely to get even thinner from Christmas Day as stocks making up about 7 per cent of the MSCI Japan index are suspended, potentially adding to volatility in the markets.

The shift to electronic share certificates from paper means companies must eliminate fractional shares (those worth less than one share) if they have them.
