UK inflation data boost pound

Sterling rose sharply after data showed UK producer price inflation hit a record high in May, giving hawks at the Bank of England strong ammunition against cutting interest rates.

Annual factory gate inflation rose to 8.9 per cent in May, while the soaring price of oil and food drove annual input price inflation to 27.9 per cent, the highest rate in decades.
