Bush picks ex-judge for attorney-general

Democrats and Republicans cautiously welcomed the nomination on Monday of Michael Mukasey, a retired federal judge known for his experience of terrorism trials, to replace Alberto Gonzales as US attorney-general.

The bipartisan support indicated that President George W. Bush had backed away from a fight with Democrats and instead opted for a candidate likely to be easily confirmed by the Senate.
