France to push ahead with EU plans

France on Tuesday vowed to plough ahead with its plans to strengthen Europe’s role in immigration, defence and the environment despite Ireland’s rejection of the Lisbon treaty.

The French government has drawn up an action-packed agenda for its six-month presidency of the EU that begins on July 1 and insists it will not change its plans, which are based on existing treaties rather than the Lisbon text.
