Whenever the media attach the “gate” suffix to a brewing public controversy, it means they can scent a scandal. So it proved with “Bloodgate”, rugby’s shameful cheating episode that unfolded last year.

Like other sports, rugby competes for media attention, but Bloodgate gave it an unwanted scale and quality of coverage.
