Bluetongue is latest blow to farmers

Britain’s first case of bluetongue virus is the same strain found in parts of continental northern Europe, where the insect-borne disease has reached epidemic proportions, it was confirmed on Sunday.

The news is a fresh blow to the British farming community that has faced huge economic pressure from export embargoes and slaughterhouse closures following several outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease over the past two months.
