The Conservative party came under fresh attack over its relationship with Lord Ashcroft on Sunday night after the elections watchdog confirmed it was investigating donations linked to the peer, one of the Tories’ main financial backers.

The Election Commission will scrutinise multi-million pound donations made by Bearwood Corporate Services, a Berkshire-based company associated with Lord Ashcroft, who is also the Conservative deputy party chairman.
