London pupils turn to private tuition

The number of children at state schools in London who have received paid private tuition has risen to more than four in 10, with the numbers boosted by the credit crunch.

The figures testify to a sizeable but largely hidden industry that seeks to bridge the gaps that, in parents’ eyes, are left by state school teaching.
