In keeping with one of the strangest traditions of Test cricket in these latitudes, a substantial proportion of the crowd arrived in Cardiff on Friday wearing fancy dress.
Groups of beery young men turned up as court jesters, convicts, gauchos (with straw hats, ponchos and Bermuda shorts) and gamekeepers, straight out of D. H. Lawrence. There was at least one male bride, complete with bouquet and veil.
