Quentin Peel: Euroscepticism spreads to the west

The battle to defeat the new constitutional treaty for the European Union - the new Treaty of Rome - is producing the most extraordinary political contortions, and strange bedfellows.

The French Socialist party was voting last night on whether to approve or reject the treaty, demonstrating that it is hopelessly split after years of devotion to the cause of EU integration. François Mitterrand, the former party leader, must be turning in his grave.
