Overseas prescription for Japan's drugmakers

Faced with government-mandated price cuts and a push to broaden the use of generic drugs in their home markets, Japanese pharmaceutical companies have switched up a gear this year.

Last week's $1.4bn bid by Osaka-based Shionogi for Sciele Pharma of the US is just the latest in a series of deals by Japanese drugmakers to acquire overseas assets.
