US and Italy ties strained

Strains in the relationship between the US and Italy were on display in Rome yesterday despite a ritualistic exchange of diplomatic niceties between Dick Cheney, US vice-president, and Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's centre-right prime minister.

Mr Cheney condemned Russia's "unilateral efforts to alter by force of arms Georgia's internationally recognised boundaries" and reiterated that Nato had agreed on eventual membership for Georgia and Ukraine.
