Abdullah named new Saudi king after Fahd’s death

Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd bin Abdelaziz died on Monday morning and Crown Prince Abdullah, his half-brother, was quickly sworn in as the new ruler.

The smooth succession from Fahd, who ran the world’s largest exporter for 23 years, had been expected and should help to ease oil market concerns. Prince Sultan, the defence minister and next in line for the succession, became the new crown prince.
