BNP Paribas takes reins of Belgian Fortis arm

An acrimonious chapter in Belgian finance closed on Tuesday as BNP Paribas formally took control of Fortis Bank’s Belgian activities.

Details are due to be released on Wednesday, but broadly follow the agreement made between the Belgian government – which nationalised the failing bank last October – and BNP in March. The deal closed after the European Commission retroactively approved the actions of the Belgian government during the nationalisation process.
