The reputation of Rachmaninov’s early one-act opera – a Pushkin tale of greed and envy – hangs on the scene in which the miser muses obsessively on his wealth. Written for Chaliapin, it adds up to a 22-minute aria for solo bass, which Ildar Abdrazakov sings here with musical flair if not quite enough actorly abandon.
