European big four rule out joint rescue action

The leaders of Europe's four largest economies vowed at the weekend not to let a single bank fail but said they would tackle their own national banking crises rather than pursue an EU-wide rescue.

At a summit in Paris on Saturday evening, President Nicolas Sarkozy and his German, British and Italian counterparts said they would ensure the "soundness and stability" of the financial system "using their own means".
