Shawn Donnan’s Journal from Aceh

One year after the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated Indonesia’s Aceh, Shawn Donnan, the FT’s Jakarta correspondent and one of the first foreign journalists into the province following the disaster, returns to Leupung, a town on the outskirts of Banda Aceh, the provincial capital.

His last visit came just days after the tsunami, on the day the last survivors of the disaster made the long walk out in search of help. A year on, a few hundred people have returned. But with two thirds of the population killed in the disaster and reconstruction still frustratingly slow, survivors are struggling to make new lives for themselves and confronting difficult living conditions, grief for lost lives, and unease about the future.
