Colin Powell, the Republican elder statesman and former Bush administration secretary of state, on Sunday ended speculation on where he stood on the White House race by endorsing Barack Obama, saying that the Democratic nominee had the makings of an “exceptional president”.
“I think we need a transformational figure,” Mr Powell told NBC’s “Meet the Press”. “I think we need a president who is a generational change and that’s why I’m supporting Barack Obama,” he said.
