French Socialists torn after congress failure

France’s opposition Socialists are heading for a prolonged period of infighting after a special congress on Sunday ended in acrimony and failed to agree on a new leader or policy outline.

Enemies of Ségolène Royal, the leadership frontrunner and former presidential candidate, refused either to find a compromise with her or unite behind an alternative candidate.
