Japanese premier apologises to China

Junichiro Koizumi, Japan’s prime minister, on Friday expressed “deep remorse” for the “tremendous damage and suffering” inflicted on Asian neighbours during the second world war, in what appeared to be an attempt to repair strained relations with China.

His statement delivered at an Asia-Africa summit in Jakarta was virtually identical to an apology given in 1995 by Tomiichi Murayama, a former Japanese prime minister.
