Bank of America, Cisco Systems and GE Capital have all grown successfully through M&As, whereas other companies have struggled to realise the potential of their M&A activities.

Integration is recognised as crucial to M&A success, and various best practices are widely recommended. For example, successful integration requires a defined management structure, comprising a steering committee with oversight responsibility; an integration programme office responsible for managing the integration; and numerous sub-teams responsible for planning and implementing specific projects.
