EU imposes arms embargo on Guinea

The European Union on Tuesday imposed an arms embargo on Guinea and prepared other sanctions in response to the killing last month of numerous anti-government demonstrators by the west African state’s military rulers.

At the same time, EU foreign policy ministers decided to lift sanctions on Uzbekistan, whose human rights record has attracted widespread criticism but which is strategically important for Nato’s operations in the war in neighbouring Afghanistan.
