Andrew Adonis, entrusted to reshape Britain’s ailing secondary education system, has a new mission: to revolutionise rail travel in this country.

“I saw in a paper recently that ministers tend to have a love of grand projects,” the transport minister tells the Financial Times. “Well actually, that hasn’t been true historically in this country. There has been a great aversion to grand projects in the post-war period.
