The paint still glistens throughout the shiny new housing developments that punctuate the grey urban sprawl of Northampton.

Some 10,000 homes have been built as part of an aggressive expansion strategy since the turn of the decade in this sizeable market town, which sits within commuting distance of the capital and bills itself as a gateway to the Midlands.
