Even for a country that regularly produces eye-catching statistics, those relating to China’s population are among the most startling.

Beijing estimates that family planning policies for its more than 1.3bn people, one-fifth of the world total, have prevented up to 400m births over the past three decades – a number that well exceeds the combined US and UK populations.
