Air traffic control: US: Future costs of controlling airspace still up in the air

The ice storm that locked down New York’s JFK airport in February has added an unwelcome layer to the tortuous efforts to upgrade a US air traffic control system dating from the 1950s.

The thousands of passengers stranded over the Valentine’s Day weekend triggered a wider political debate over the airline industry, including calls for a passenger bill of rights widely seen as a distraction from the urgent need to push Congress to fund a replacement system.
