Merkel has a taste of leading an unwieldy coalition

Angela Merkel yesterday becameGermany's first female chancellor and the first from the country's former communist east, heading an unwieldy left-right coalition that faces the tough task of reviving Europe's biggest economy.

Ms Merkel, a divorced Protestant and a physicist by training, who broke the mould of male-dominated Christian Democratic Union politics, will head the first left-right grand coalition since Kurt Georg Kiesinger in 1966.
