Savers face prospect of zero rates

Interest rates on savings accounts are predicted to fall an average of a quarter of a percentage point after Thursday’s cut in the benchmark base rate to a record low of 0.5 per cent.

More accounts are set to reduce savers’ returns to 0.1 per cent or less in coming weeks, say experts. With a handful already paying no return at all on low balances, more savers could also face the prospect of zero per cent rates.
