UK agency backs open-source software

The UK government's procurement agency will on on Thursday mount a substantial challenge to Microsoft's dominance of operating systems for desktop computers.

Its Office of Government Commerce, which is charged with promoting efficiency and value for money, says in a report published on Thursday that open-source software is ?a viable desktop alternative for the majority of government users? and ?can generate significant savings?.
