Motor vehicle sales plumbed fresh lows around the world last month, adding to pressure on carmakers, their suppliers and dealers.

General Motors, Toyota, Ford and Honda all reported declines of more than 30 per cent in the US, the biggest market, compared with December 2007. Total fourth-quarter sales were the lowest since 1981.
