Steve Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive, said he still thought there was a “good opportunity” for a deal with Yahoo that would combine the internet search operations of both companies.

Mr Ballmer said on Thursday that he had contacted Carol Bartz shortly after her appointment as Yahoo’s chief in January after Jerry Yang, Yahoo co-founder, stepped down.
