Under the leadership of Junichiro Koizumi, Japan's prime minister until last September, women flocked to the Liberal Democratic party. They liked his message of painful but necessary change, and his style.

The female vote was a big part of the LDP's sometimes stunning electoral success under Mr Koizumi, the third longest-serving prime minister since the war.
