GDP figures boost Wall Street stocks

US stocks rose on Thursday as investors took a favourable view on the latest GDP reading and reacted to better-than-expected quarterly earnings figures from retailers Sears and Tiffany.

The broad advances came in spite of initially higher oil prices on fears that tropical storm Gustav may disrupt oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.
