Centrists in US Senate to play key role in health reform

The Democratic leadership on Capitol Hill faces a battle to persuade a pivotal group of centrist senators to vote in favour of health reform, according to Ben Nelson, the senator for Nebraska and one of the party’s key conservatives.

“The healthcare bill as it stands right now is almost certainly not something I would vote for,” Mr Nelson said in a Financial Times interview. “Five or six colleagues [other Democratic senators] are in the same place as me – we have mutual understanding.”
