The main job of the four staff who sit all day in a room above the Paris metro’s Bercy station is to watch a bank of screens, checking in case anything unusual happens. The unusual, however, hardly ever happens and, to the outsiders’ eye, it looks as if the men have very little to do.

Yet, as far as any human being drives the metro’s Line 14, it is these control room staff.
