Even on a Sunday afternoon, when the Route 10 Trolley – or tram – pulls into the subterranean Laurel Station in central Philadelphia, there are too few seats for the passengers trying to get on.

Watching the passengers struggling to board the crowded vehicle, it is easy to see why Philadelphia’s small network ranks second in the US’s list of fastest-growing light-rail systems, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
