When one of Maersk Line’s E Class container ships is in port, it towers over the quayside and, at 397 metres long, takes up huge amounts of berth space. Inside, the world’s largest container ships are powered by 14-cylinder diesel engines that burn heavy fuel oil at the astonishing rate of about 16 tonnes an hour.
Yet, when Maersk Line, part of Copenhagen-based AP Moller-Maersk, started introducing the eight ships in 2006, it emphasised not just their size but their environmental friendliness.
