Twenty years ago on October 19, stock market traders and investors watched with “horrified fascination” as Wall Street plunged more than 20 per cent in a single trading session.

There has never been a one-day fall of that magnitude before or since and was nearly double the the worst one-day slide during the 1929 crash. Little wonder the day has come to be remembered as Black Monday.
