China adds special riot squad to arsenal

When China flooded the streets of Urumqi last fortnight with security personnel after deadly riots in the city, black-uniformed para-military units, known as the People’s Armed Police, were in the front line.

Alongside them, but in much smaller numbers and placed mostly only at strategic intersections in the city, were members of the Chinese military, the People’s Liberation Army.
