Gordon Brown invoked Barack Obama’s election-winning catchphrase, as he vied with David Cameron on Wednesday to use the Queen’s Speech to appear the party leader most in tune with the changed economic times.

“This is the era, as everybody can see, of ‘yes we can’ ... only the opposition are saying ‘no we won’t’,” said the prime minister, as he branded the Conservatives “uncaring and unfair”.
