Brown faces union defeat in spite of reforms

Gordon Brown was facing on Sunday night the prospect of an embarrassing conference defeat at the hands of the trade unions despite remaining on track to win rule changes that will blunt their power to cause similar upsets in future.

The reforms are subject to a card vote – the outcome of which will be announced on Monday. But no union leaders spoke against the proposals in debate on Sunday.
