Alliance Boots is planning to create the second biggest optician in the UK after agreeing to merge its 300-strong chain of eye shops with competitor Dollond & Aitchison.

Stefano Pessina, executive chairman of Alliance Boots, said in an interview with the FT that he had been working on the all-share deal for about a year.
