EU’s future hangs on knife-edge vote

The European Union’s Lisbon treaty and the immediate future of the 27-nation bloc lie in the hands of 3m Irish voters in Thursday’s referendum, with campaigners on both sides saying the result is finely balanced.

“It is just too close to call,” said one senior official in the centre-right government of Brian Cowen, Ireland’s prime minister.
