Whitbread predicted that consumer spending pressures would intensify in the second half of the year, in spite of business travellers driving strong revenues at its Premier Inn budget hotels and sales at Costa Coffee rising 26 per cent.
Alan Parker, chief executive, tempered buoyant interim results with a warning that: “We are in uncharted territories and we just don’t know how it’s going to wash down to the consumer and corporate markets.”
