Indonesia’s rice farmers are basking in a bumper harvest this year. Yields have soared so much that a national deficit of 1.3m tonnes in 2007 is expected to become a surplus of 1.5m tonnes this year.
Farmers and government officials admit that while there have been improvements in agricultural production techniques, the main reason is the weather – a prolonged wet season with heavier rain each day than in the past.
