MPs to be given vote on future of Trident

MPs are to be given a vote on replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system early next year, and ministers are preparing for what could be a sizeable rebellion.

Plans for a replacement are expected to be published within weeks. Des Browne, the defence secretary, is drawing up a strategic case to spend up to £20bn on a successor system and put it to the cabinet this year.
