Strange stones: Rare gems to single you out in a crowd

Historically, jewellers choose the safest stones for their one-off anniversary collections. One brand has opted instead for stones so obscure that most consumers may not even recognise their names. Is this the new way to ensure a piece is unique, or absolute folly?

Chopard, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, is using demantoid garnet, kunzite, Paraiba tourmaline and fire opal as corner pieces of a one-off celebratory collection.
