Tighten borders, new EU members told

Many of the European Union’s newer members must overcome shortcomings in border management ahead of their planned entry to the EU’s passport-free zone in December, a confidential report has warned.

Most of the nine, predominately former communist nations poised to join the Schengen area, were told to improve visa issuance standards as part of efforts to combat illegal immigration.
