Olympic boost pushes FTSE through 5,200

The FTSE 100 sprinted through the 5,200 level yesterday with the news that London had won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic games providing a boost to sentiment across a wide range of sectors.

The FTSE 100 rose 39.5 points or 0.8 per cent to 5,229.6, reaching a new three-year high for a fourth successive session. The mid-cap FTSE 250 also hit a new all-time high with a gain of 89.5 points or 1.2 per cent at 7,487.9. Trading volumes were strong at 3.9bn.
