Chancellor upbeat on UK growth outlook

Gordon Brown on Wednesday gave his most upbeat assessment yet of the outlook for UK growth in 2006, suggesting the final data would “surprise people who thought last year we would be entering a period of low growth”.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the chancellor said “the exciting thing” about the economic figures was that the “balance of growth” across the nation was now far better than it has been in the past.
